The first version of the main character, "Gus". Each sprite is designed to create player immersion by providing real-time feedback on their interactions.
To reward players after each session of their play through, the number of flies they collected act as in-game currency that can be used to continue from where they left off (one time per game) or get a new hat for Gus.
Each fly has a smooth, light green stroke around it, where as, the fruits and bees (see below) have a pointy red stroke. The intention of this design was to ensure enough visual and colour contrast for situations when a player cannot see colour.
I drew and animated the bee and fly characters in Procreate and implemented them into the game engine, Unity.
Rules I used to keep the art style consistant across all pick ups (Flies, Bees and Fruit): limited colour pallet, black outline, light source highlights and the use of the pointy red stroke/ smooth green stroke.
Rules I used as I created various 2D environment assets: Light grey stroke on background elements so that black stroke characters and pick ups stand out. These assets can be placed and animated in the game engine to create a variety of themed scenes.
Leveraging my background as a User Experience designer, I created, implemented and iterated on the UI and screen flows based on usability and interaction design best practices and observations during play testing.
Throughout every stage in the development cycle, I've sought out player feedback to quickly iterate and pivot where needed in order to improve the game's concept and inform the priority of features.
